Ice Hotels

The original ice hotel, in Swedish Lapland.

One hotel · Sweden

An ice hotel melts. That is the point. Each winter a new version is cut, built and carved, then left to return to the river in spring.

We list one property here, the one that started the idea. Its seasonal build and its year-round ice rooms make it a category on its own.

  1. Icehotel

    Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Jukkasjärvi is a small village north of the Arctic Circle, close to Kiruna. The Torne River runs past it, and its ice is the building material.

Every winter the seasonal hotel is built anew. Artists from many countries design individual art suites, so no two years look the same. Guests sleep on ice beds wrapped in thermal bedding, at temperatures well below zero.

A permanent building keeps ice suites cold all year with solar-powered cooling. Warm rooms and cabins sit alongside, and most guests mix one cold night with warmer ones. Northern lights and dog-sledding fill the dark months.
