Capsule Hotels

Three capsule hotels, two in Kyoto and one in Singapore.

Three hotels · Japan · Singapore

A capsule is a bed with walls. You get a pod for sleeping, a locker for luggage and shared space for everything else. Price and location are usually the draw.

The three below show how wide the format has become. One leans into design, one into the bath-house tradition, and one into a playful space-age look.

  1. Tsukimi Hotel

    Kyoto, Japan

Gion is right outside. Yasaka Shrine and the lanes around Hanamikoji Street are a few minutes away on foot, which is rare for a capsule hotel.

The design is clean and minimal. Pods are fitted with larger mattresses than the standard capsule, a deliberate choice aimed at sleep rather than novelty.

Shared spaces carry the stay. There is a kitchen guests can use, and a rooftop lounge looks out over the neighbourhood.

  2. Capsule Resort Kyoto Square

    Kyoto, Japan

Nijo Castle is the nearest landmark, a short walk from the door. The Kyoto International Manga Museum is close too.

Scale sets it apart. This is a large capsule hotel in a tall building, closer to the classic bath-house model than to a design hostel. A big shared bath is part of the routine here.

Its lounge sits high in the building, with views across the city’s low roofline. For a stay built around the central and western sights, the location works well.

  3. Galaxy Pods @ Chinatown

    Singapore

Mosque Street, in the middle of Chinatown, is the address. The MRT station is a few minutes’ walk, and the business district is close by.

Pods are styled like small spacecraft. Each one closes with its own door and comes with lighting, power and climate controls inside. Single pods suit solo travellers; doubles cater to pairs.

Downstairs, a communal lounge and dining area stay open around the clock. It is a practical base with a sense of humour.
